LA JOLLA, CA : Car crashes into bedroom, kills sleeping man, 96 on Tuesday, 25th October 2016
A 96-year old man was killed just after midnight Tuesday while he was sleeping in his own bed.
"It makes no sense at all. It's horrific. I mean, I can't wrap my head around it. It's horrible," said retirement home director Gary Boriero.
Police said a driver ran a stop sign and lost control of his car, and when the car came crashing into the building, apparently the victim's bed was up against the wall.
"I do know the staff is very saddened and upset. Thoughts and prayers go out to the family right now," Boriero said.
Police have identified the driver as 53-year-old Randy Albert Gaster. He was evaluated for drugs and alcohol, and investigators said at this time he didn't appear to be under the influence.
Police are looking into whether he suffered some type of medical emergency.
As for the victim, his family wants to keep his name private.
"I'm still looking at this, and it's still hard to understand how this could have even happened," said Richard Stroller, who lives at the retirement community and is the president of the residents' association.
"It was a shock. We all got up this morning, and we all had notes under our door that an accident had occurred during the night," he said.
Stroller knew the gentleman who was killed, "a gentle person he was old and he was in the memory care unit. Most of that time is for being quiet."
Two other residents were affected by the accident, They've since been moved to other rooms.
The man who died lived alone.
"The shock is you could be laying in your bed, and all at once something happens," Stroller said. "It's catastrophic."
