Warrenton,VI : Two killed, one critically injured in Remington crash on June, Monday 12th 2017

Two people were killed and a good Samaritan who tried to save them critically injured in a fiery three-vehicle crash this morning at James Madison Highway and Freeman's Ford Road in Remington.

Authorities were called to the chain-reaction collision in the northbound lanes of James Madison Highway at 7:29 a.m. The impact caused one of the vehicles involved to catch fire, said state police spokeswoman Corinne Geller.

Both of the people who were killed were in the car that caught fire, Geller said. A passerby who tried to save them from the burning car suffered serious injuries and was flown by helicopter to a trauma center.

The names of the people involved in the crash have not been released to the public yet.

The wreck occurred at the same intersection where a 5-year-old boy lost his life and his siblings were seriously injured last fall resulting in a petition to county and state officials to make the intersection safer.

The petition called for a reduction in speed limit near the intersection's stoplight and rumble strips to refocus distracted drivers. It urged the Virginia Department of Transportation to conduct a safety corridor study in the area.

Lee District Supervisor Chris Butler said he plans to meet with VDOT officials to try to "brainstorm" possible solutions to make the intersection safer.

Lee District includes Remington.

State police, the Remington Volunteer Fire Department and the Fauquier Sheriff's Office remain at the scene of Monday's crash for investigation.
