Car Crash Collision Kills 2, and Injures 80 People on Texas’ Interstate 10 Near Beaumont
This Thanksgiving morning on Interstate 10 near Beaumont, Texas was the scene of a horrific 100 car crash collision traffic accident, which killed 2 and injured another 80 people.
The massive wreck, which happened at around 8:45 a.m. local time (9:45 a.m. ET), included a number of tractor-trailers, and has closed Interstate 10 near Beaumont, according to the official report.
A spokeswoman for the Texas Department of Public Safety’s Beaumont district has confirmed the deaths of two people but did not have further details.
More that 51 others had reported injuries according to Stephanie Davis the Public Safety Spokeswoman in the Beaumont district..Up until moments ago, both directions of the interstate were closed. Police have reopened westbound lanes but the eastbound lanes will be closed until at least 10 p.m., Davis said.
Some of those injured are in critical condition, according to Denise Richter, the spokeswoman for Acadian Ambulance Service. Richter said that 22 ambulances from the Beaumont, Houston and Lake Charles, La. areas were called out to the accident. Richter says the ambulance service had taken 51 people to Beaumont area hospitals.
Davis has advised motorist to please avoid the route entirely.
Officials are still sorting out the accident and dealing with injuries and routing traffic around the area.
Heavy fog was reported in the Houston area most of Thanksgiving morning, including along the stretch of I-10 west of Beaumont. Davis said preliminary indications suggest the wrecks occurred as a result of a low visibility.
According to Associated Press, the chain-reaction accidents happened over a two-mile stretch between Taylor’s Bayou and Hampshire Road. Both directions were closed for several hours before westbound lanes were reopened.
