Fort Lauderdale, FL : Driver dies after crashing into Sunrise house early Sunday, August 14, 2016
A man died early Sunday after apparently losing control of his car on a tight neighborhood curve, plowing into an occupied house in Sunrise.
Just hours before the 2 a.m. crash, police said they had attempted to pull the driver over, but he fled. Police said officers decided against pursuing the suspect.
The family that lives inside the house at the elbow of the turn, at 12050 NW 29th St., was sleeping in the back bedrooms and were not harmed, officials said.
"When I first heard the noise, I thought it was a plane crash, that's how loud it was," said Alan Gordon, who lives next door.
Gordon rushed out of his house at the same time as several other neighbors, including Thomas Cascio, who was in his backyard when the car went by.
"When we got out there, the guy was all bent up in the car, and that's when we called paramedics but they were already arriving," Cascio said. "The guy in the car, he wasn't responding at all."
The occupants of the house were forced to relocate temporarily as a portion of the front brick wall and windows were smashed and shattered.
The identify of the driver was not released Sunday night.
