BOWIE COUNTY, TX : Three dead in ETX crash on Sunday, 8th November, 2020

Three people are dead after a crash in Bowie County early Sunday morning.

The Texas Department of Public Safety states the crash happened at about 12:32 a.m. Troopers said they were notified of a one vehicle crash on County Road 3302, about six miles north of DeKalb. A preliminary investigation indicates that a 2017 Chevrolet Malibu was traveling south on County Road 3302, and for an as yet undetermined reason, the driver of the Chevrolet lost control as the vehicle entered a corner, causing the vehicle to leave the road, overturn, and land in a creek submerged.

The driver of the Chevrolet, Katelyn Vaughn, 17, of Simms, and two passengers Megan Daniel, 17, of New Boston, and Ashlin Cox, 19, of New Boston, all died at the scene. All three were pronounced deceased by Justice of the Peace Catie Hawkins and taken to a local funeral home in New Boston.

Vaughn a senior at James Bowie and Daniel a senior at New Boston High School were both multi-sport athletes. Cox graduated from New Boston High School in 2019.

Both school districts say these ladies were outstanding students and people that everyone gravitated to.

Administrators say it’s a devastating loss, but there are pastors and counselors on-site to help comfort students and staff.

“I think we’ve got a strong community and I think we have a strong campus and I think that you know just leaning on each other and coming together we’re going to be able to help each other through this,” Principal of New Boston High School Neil Koenig said in a statement On Monday.

“She’s a beautiful young lady like I said with a lot of potential and you know she will be missed and it’s going to take our community a while to get over this. This is a tragic loss,” Superintendent of Simms Independent School District Rex Burks said about James Bowie senior Katelyn Vaughn.

The crash remains under investigation and no additional information is currently available.
