Richmond, CA : 27-year-old Andre Bayati killed in a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 80 in Richmond on Wednesday, April 15, 2015

Authorities identified a man who died in a motorcycle crash Wednesday afternoon as 27-year-old El Cerrito resident Andre Bayati.

The crash near the Central Avenue exit on westbound Interstate 80 happened around 2:50 p.m., when Bayati fell off the motorcycle and was hit by a car, California Highway Patrol Officer Sean Wilkenfeld said.

Bayati died on the freeway, Wilkenfeld said. Authorities said they don't know why he fell off the motorcycle and were investigating whether Bayati lost control or was hit by another vehicle.

A big-rig truck overturned and pinned an SUV, but the drivers of those cars suffered only minor injuries, Wilkenfeld said.

Three lanes of I-80 were closed for several hours.
