Alcohol impairment is being investigated as a possible factor in the head-on, two-vehicle crash on North Limestone Street that left a 24-year-old Urbana man suffering from serious injuries, the Ohio Highway Patrol Post in Springfield said.
Codie Gilvin was driving a gray 1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse north in the 2400 block of North Limestone at high speed about 11 a.m. when he crossed the center line into the path of an oncoming Dodge Ram pickup being driven by Jonathan Griffin, 21, of Gross Pointe, Mich.
Gilvin’s car hit the truck, then continued off the roadway and hit a power pole on the passenger side of his vehicle, according to the state patrol, which noted he was not wearing a seat belt. Gilvin was taken first to Springfield Regional Hospital, then transported by CareFlight to Miami Valley Hospital.
Griffin was not injured, but his truck sustained disabling damage.
The crash remains under investigation, according to the patrol, which did not make mention of any traffic violations or charges.
UPDATE @ 12:40 p.m.: The driver of the car was described as a man in his 20s. He suffered critical injuries in the head-on crash, said a first responder at the scene.
According to the Ohio State Patrol trooper on scene, the man was driving north on Limestone at a high speed. He went left of center and hit a truck head on, spinning both vehicles in opposite directions. Neither the truck driver, nor his passenger, were injured. OSP will continue the investigation.
