A 30-year-old Hilton Head Island man arrested at his Oakview Road home Monday night is a person of interest in a daylong chase across Beaufort County.
Thomas Akeem Bryan was extracted from his home by Beaufort County Sheriff's Office SWAT deputies and arrested on active felony bench warrants out of Jasper County shortly before 9 p.m., according to a Sheriff’s Office news release Monday night. Bryan will be held in Beaufort County Detention Center as Monday’s incidents are investigated.
Bryan did not face any charges in connection with Monday’s incidents by 9 p.m., but “additional charges are expected,” according to the release. No injuries were reported in connection with the search or arrest.
The Hardeeville Police Department and the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office began searching for the driver of a stolen mini-van around 11:30 a.m. on U.S. 278 near the Sun City entrance, according to an earlier news release. The driver fled the scene on foot.Later in the afternoon, a yellow pickup truck was reported stolen from Coburn Drive in Sun City and was seen by Bluffton Police Department officers on S.C. 170 near Bluffton Parkway, according to the Sheriff’s Office. A car chase began but was called off when it became a danger to the public. The driver is believed to be the same person who ran from the morning crash.
The truck was found unoccupied on Oakview Road off Spanish Wells Road, according to the release. The search continued there.
Capt. Bob Bromage of the Sheriff’s Office said that the mini-van was reported stolen from a Palmetto Dunes residence on Hilton Head Island on Sunday.
As Hardeeville Police attempted to pull the vehicle over Monday morning, it struck another vehicle from behind before the driver fled on foot toward the woodline and in the direction of University Park.
A passenger in the stolen vehicle was interviewed by investigators, Bromage said.
The adult female driver of the vehicle struck by the mini-van sustained minor injuries and was examined and treated by EMS at the scene, according to the release.
