Miami ,FL : Two arrested in bus bench hit-and-run that injured 4 on Friday ,July 24th 2015
Police arrested two people in connection to a hit-and-run in North Miami that sent three people to the hospital and injured an 11-year-old girl, Friday morning. They are asking for the public's help in locating one suspect who still remains at large.
According to North Miami Police, 20-year-old Devon James and a passenger plowed into a bus bench along Northeast 125th Street, near Northeast 12th Avenue, sometime after 9:30 a.m.
Two of the victims were seriously injured. One of them was taken to Aventura Hospital, and the other to Ryder Trauma Center. Eleven-year-old Chelsea Romain suffered minor injuries. "I didn't even see it coming," she said.
Moments later, Romain said, she saw the two men inside the car fleeing from the scene on foot without stopping to offer help. "They ran; one ran this way, the other one ran the other way, and they came back together and they ran straight down," she said.
Police said James was apprehended about 12 hours after the accident. He is facing a list of charges, including four counts of leaving the scene of an accident with injuries.
According to the arrest affidavit, James gave a reason for bolting after the crash. The report states he told police "that he was intoxicated at the time of the crash and fled the scene because he knew his Florida ID card was suspended, and he didn't want to have any involvement with the police while on probation."
Investigators said James, who was equipped with an ankle monitor at the time of the crash, is on probation related to a 2011 burglary and aggravated battery case. Appearing in court Sunday, he was denied bond because he violated probation.
Police also arrested James' girlfriend, 25-year-old Aquicresha Gibson. She is accused of allowing James to use her car knowing he didn't have a valid driver's license.
The search for the missing passenger continues. Detectives said he may go by the name of "Zay."
