Whiteville, NC : Man died in fatal collision between vehicle, 18-wheeler on U.S. 74/76 in Columbus County on Thursday morning, December 3, 2015

State Highway Patrol troopers are investigating a fatal accident on U.S. 74/76 in Columbus County Thursday morning.

According to Lt. Jeff Gordon with the State Highway Patrol, a man in a silver Ford Crown Victoria was driving north on Byrdville-Freeman Road around 10 a.m. when he failed to stop at stop sign and drove into the path of a tractor trailer traveling east on U.S. 74/76.

The vehicle became lodged under the 18-wheeler and was dragged several hundred feet.

The man died as a result of the collision. Officials are waiting to release his identity until next of kin has been notified.

The wreck caused traffic to back up on U.S. 74-76 while crews worked to clear the scene.
