New Haven, CT : 36-year-old man was killed in a sweeper truck crash at Bridgeport on Thursday,11th August,2016
A 36-year-old man was killed Thursday when a street sweeper crashed on the southbound Exit 6 off-ramp from Interstate 91, shutting down the ramp for hours. The driver of the street sweeper, identified as Christopher Ruiz of Bridgeport, was ejected from the vehicle and became trapped on the right side, state police said.
The crash occurred at about 1:30 p.m. and also shut down Willow Street in both directions between State Street and Mitchell Drive near Wilbur Cross High School. The Exit 6 on-ramp from Willow Street was also closed after the accident. The roads and exit ramps all reopened at about 4:30 p.m.
The street sweeper belongs to CSS Industries of New Haven, according to police. The sweeper appeared to have crashed and rolled onto its side at the bottom of the ramp where the ramp intersects with Willow Street. The wreck appeared to have taken down a light pole and damaged several feet of metal guardrail.Acting Fire Chief Matthew Marcarelli said it appeared the driver lost control of the sweeper and was ejected after the crash. He later died at Yale-New Haven Hospital, state police said.
“It was a complicated rescue,” he said. “They (emergency crews) did an outstanding job, especially considering the heat.”Crews had to bring in two heavy-duty trucks to clear the damaged sweeper. One wrecker pulled the sweeper back upright before it was lifted onto a flatbed truck. The flatbed then drove it from the scene at about 4 p.m. with a state police escort.
The cause of the crash was not immediately clear.
