Roanoke, VA : 1 person dead, 1 hospitalized after head-on wreck on U.S. 220 near Rocky Mount on Wednesday afternoon, July 20, 2016
A person was killed and another person was injured in a head-on collision in Franklin County on U.S. 220 on Wednesday afternoon, state police said.
Sgt. Rick Garletts said a car and an SUV collided in front of Midway Chevrolet Buick GMC, just north of Rocky Mount, at 12:33 p.m.
A 1999 Suzuki Grand Vitara was traveling south in the northbound lanes on U.S. 220 and struck a 2013 Dodge Charger that was traveling north, Garletts said.
The driver of the Grand Vitara, George Jackson Porter, 86, of Boones Mill, died at the scene. He was wearing a seat belt.
The driver of the Charger, Diane A. Law, 64, of Glade Hill, was taken to a hospital for treatment of her injuries. She was wearing a seat belt. Law is listed in critical condition at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, according to a hospital official.
The state police crash reconstruction team was called to assist with the investigation. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
