Wemme, OR : Wash., man in critical condition after crash on U.S. 26 in the Wemme area Wednesday on July 30, 2014
A Battle Ground, Wash., man is in critical, but stable condition today after a head-on crash on U.S. 26 in the Wemme area Wednesday.
John M. Fletcher, 18, was flown by Life Flight helicopter ambulance to OHSU Hospital, where he remains in the intensive-care unit.
Lt. Gregg Hastings, Oregon State Police spokesman, said Fletcher was driving a Subaru Legacy station wagon west on U.S. 26 near Milepost 39 around 3:35 p.m., when an eastbound Ford pickup crossed the center turn lane into a head-on crash. The pickup, driven by Trevor E. Hughes, 26, of Rhododenron, rolled before coming to rest on its side.
Hughes was taken by ambulance to OHSU Hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries and released.
Both drivers were using safety restraints when the crash occurred, Hastings said.
Firefighter-paramedics from the Hoodland Fire District administered first aid and stabilized the victims before they were taken to the hospital.
State troopers and the Oregon Department of Transportation temporarily shut down the highway in both directions.
