OTTAWA COUNTY, MI : Troopers injured while working fatality wreck near Miami on Monday, March 27th 2017
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol has reported that two Troopers were injured while working a fatality accident approximately 6 miles east of Miami in Ottawa County.
The collision occurred Monday evening at approximately 10:14 p.m. while Trooper Shawn Cummings of Pryor and Trooper Caleb Cole of Wyandotte were attending to an accident that claimed the life of an unnamed 31-year-old woman from Nevada, Missouri.
According to the OHP report, Trooper Cole's unit was stopped in the inside lane of the Will Rogers Turnpike I-44 due to the fatality accident. Trooper Cummings' unit was slowing to park behind Cole's vehicle when a van driven by Matthew Dean Holbrook, 59, of Miami struck his cruiser from behind, pushing it into Cole's.
The cause of the collision injuring the Troopers is currently listed as Inattentive Driving. Details on the cause of the fatality wreck have not been released.
Troopers Cole and Cummings were both treated and released with head injuries and in good condition at Integris Baptist Hospital, Miami.
Holbrook sustained no injuries but was also examined and released at Integris Miami.
In a post to its Facebook page, OHP urged drivers to slow down and pay attention.
"Troopers were working a fatality wreck last night on the Will Rogers when one of our patrol cars was rear-ended, knocking that patrol car into the other patrol car, damaging both vehicles and injuring both Troopers," reads the Facebook post. "Troopers were treated and released. Let this be a reminder to slow down when approaching emergency vehicles, and pay attention at all times."
