Two people were killed in a head-on crash on Highway 395 Thursday evening, authorities said.
According to California Highway Patrol officials, a 46-year-old Santa Rosa woman driving a Volkswagen SUV and a 59-year-old Ridgecrest man driving a 1998 Chevrolet sedan died following a crash at approximately 7:05 p.m. south of Kramer Junction.
The Volkswagen was traveling south on Highway 395 and the Chevrolet was traveling north, authorities said.
“The driver of the Volkswagen traveled from the southbound lane, crossed over a single yellow line and entered the northbound lane in an attempt to pass slower moving traffic ahead,” CHP officials said in a statement. “As a result of this unsafe driving, the Volkswagen collided head-on with the Chevrolet.”
Both drivers suffered fatal injuries as a result of the collision, authorities said.
A Dodge Ram and a Toyota Corolla, which were both traveling north behind the Chevrolet, sustained minor property damage as a result of the collision.
According to authorities, alcohol and/or drugs are not believed to be a contributing factor. The collision is currently under investigation and anyone with information is urged to contact the CHP Barstow Office at 760-255-5900.
