An Elmo man was killed Monday afternoon in what a police officer described as a freak accident that occurred while the victim was mowing grass at the Younger Auction Co. just east of Main Street on the south end of Maryville.
Bill Porter, 68, who was working for Younger Auction as an independent contractor, was operating a John Deere riding mower when, according to the officer, he steered too close to an old fire-protection trailer loaded with decaying ladders and other antiquated gear.As Porter drove the mower near the trailer he was wounded in the right side of his neck by a protruding ladder part described as a metal spike or nail about the size of a pencil.
Maryville Public Safety Sgt. Rex Riley said Porter was receiving CPR from civilians when police arrived on the scene.
