A stolen pickup truck being pursued by police crashed into the Dover Gardens Tavern in Westlake Thursday night, injuring 12 bar patrons and the driver of the truck.
Officers from Avon and Avon Lake were in pursuit of the vehicle, which was stolen from Avon Lake, just before 9 p.m. when the vehicle entered Westlake, traveling eastbound on Detroit Road.
A Westlake patrolman deployed stop sticks on Detroit Road near Cahoon Road. The suspect ran over them and crashed into the bar, at 27402 Detroit Road.
The driver of the truck has been arrested by Avon Lake police and has been taken to St. John Medical Center for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash.
According to police, charges from Westlake may follow. They say the suspect has a suspended license and active warrants from two other uninvolved agencies.
Twelve patrons who were injured have been transported to four local hospitals or are being treated at the site. According to police, injuries "range from bumps and bruises to more serious."
Firefighters from Westlake, Bay Village, Rocky River, North Olmsted, Lakewood and Avon responded along with police officers from Westlake, Bay Village, Avon and Avon Lake.
