Yakima, WA : Union Gap teenager killed in I-82 crash on Monday night, June 27, 2016

A 16-year-old Union Gap boy was killed in a rollover accident on Interstate 82 Monday night, but the crash went unnoticed until Tuesday morning.

Cobey D. Batrum was driving east on the highway and was east of the North First Street entrance ramp when his 1997 Honda Civic left the right side of the road, rolled and came to rest on its roof, according to the Washington State Patrol.

The car ended up below the highway and behind trees, where it wasn’t visible to most drivers, State Patrol Lt. Kiley Conaway said.

It was spotted shortly after 10 a.m. Tuesday by a passing truck driver, Conaway said.

Investigators think the crash occurred about 9:55 p.m. because Batrum’s family reported him missing after he failed to get home by 10 p.m., Conaway said.

Yakima County Coroner Jack Hawkins said Batrum died almost instantly of head injuries. While Batrum’s license listed Auburn as his hometown, Hawkins said the boy was living in Union Gap at the time.

Batrum was wearing a seat belt .
