FAIRHAVEN, MA : Man, 87, drives wrong way on Rt. 195, causes crash in Fairhaven on Sunday, August 13, 2017

A woman drove off the highway and crashed into a tree while trying to avoid an 87-year-old who was driving in the wrong direction on Route 195 Sunday afternoon.

Massachusetts State Police initially received calls at about 3:20 p.m. from motorists who reported seeing the driver of a 2011 Toyota Camry heading west in the eastbound lanes of Route 195 in Mattapoisett. Before officers could stop him, the driver continued into the next town of Fairhaven, police said.

There a New Bedford woman driving eastbound in a 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser drove off the left side of the roadway, to avoid hitting the car, and struck a tree. The 28-year-old woman was taken to the hospital by ambulance, treated for minor injuries and released, police said.

The wrong-way driver, an 87-year-old man from Swansea, continued after the crash. Shortly after Fairhaven Police were able to stop him, state police said.
