Whiteford, MD : Motorcycle rider dies after crash on Route 136 at the intersection of Heaps Road on Tuesday, Sep 8, 2015
A 56-year-old man died Tuesday after the motorcycle he was riding crashed into the rear of a car at the intersection of Heaps Road and Route 136 in Whiteford, and then while lying in the road he was hit by a dump truck, according to Maryland State Police.
The man, whose name was not immediately released, was riding south on Route 136 when the car ahead of him slowed at the intersection to make a left where Heaps becomes Kerr Road. The rider could not slow down in time, and he crashed into the rear of the car, said Sgt. Cummins, of the State Police Bel Air Barrack.
The rider was ejected, and he landed in the opposite lane of Route 136, where he was struck by a dump truck heading north, Cummins said. He said the dump truck driver didn't have any chance to stop.
First responders were alerted shortly before noon, according to Cummins and the Harford County fire service. The victim was taken to the hospital in "grave condition" by the Whiteford Volunteer Fire Company, said Jennifer Chenworth, of the Harford County Volunteer Fire & EMS Association.
Route 136 was closed in both directions between Ridge and Kerr roads while the state troopers investigated the crash, according to the Maryland State Highway Administration.
The motorcycle rider was pronounced dead upon arrival at Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air, Cummins said.
The sergeant said alcohol and speed were not factors in the crash and no one else was injured.
