Carroll County ,MD : 41 - Years old Leonard Smith Jrinjured and lanes closed after Milk tanker crash along Interstate 70 on Wednesday ,May 20th 2015
An overturned tanker caused delays Wednesday morning in both directions of travel on I-70 in Mount Airy after spilling several thousand gallons of milk.
The tanker and another vehicle involved, a car that struck the tanker after it overturned, were removed from the road, but a county hazmat crew remained in the median to clean up the milk, said Sgt. Vinson Smith, a Maryland State Police supervisor.
“Due to the amount of milk that spilled, it was considered a hazmat incident, so they were having to take some extra steps and procedures,” Smith said.
Smith identified the driver of the tanker as Frederick resident Leonard Smith Jr., 41, who was taken to Frederick Memorial Hospital along with the driver of the car. Trooper Joshua Sorenson, who handled the call at the scene, said both drivers were conscious and alert when troopers arrived.
The crash took place at around 6:15 a.m. near the Carroll County line as the tanker was merging onto eastbound I-70 from the Md. 27 ramp, Sorenson said. For reasons still under investigation, the tanker swerved and overturned in the median, partially blocking both eastbound and westbound lanes, Sorenson said.
