Colorado Springs, CO : One killed in auto-pedestrian crash in Colorado Springs early Thursday, March 9, 2017

A 60-year-old man whose car had broken down on Highway 85/87 near South Academy Boulevard was hit and killed as he stood in the roadway early Thursday.

The man has not been identified.

The crash happened just before 1 a.m. when the 60-year-old's Pontiac Montana reportedly broke down heading south on Highway 85/87, according to the Colorado State Patrol. The man was out of the vehicle and standing in the middle lane of the highway when a Subaru Tribeca also traveling in that lane drove up, the patrol said.

The Subaru driver, 22-year-old Rene Rocha, of Colorado Springs, said he swerved to the right but hit the man. Rocha was not injured.

Speed and impairment are not factors in the crash, the patrol said.

The crash came a day after the Colorado Department of Transportation released a report saying pedestrian fatalities on Colorado roadways are on the rise. The report noted a 30 percent increase in fatalities from 2015 to 2016.

Colorado Springs' trend didn't show the same sharp spike, but the city has mourned the deaths of two juvenile pedestrians this year, and four other elementary students are recovering after they were hit in a crosswalk on their way to school.

CDOT said it will be renewing it's pedestrian safety campaign in an attempt to drive down pedestrian fatalities.
