Union County, N.C : Driver injured after tractor-trailer crash on Highway 218 near Rock Hill Church Road on Monday morning, February 2, 2015
Union County officials had to close Highway 218 early monday morning after a tractor-trailer crashed and overturned, backing up traffic in both directions.
Officials were letting one lane of traffic go at a time, but drivers were urged to consider using an alternate route while clean up was taking place.
The wreck happened around 7 a.m. on Highway 218 near Rock Hill Church Road. The tractor-trailer was carrying sand when it ran off the road, officials said.
Officials said the driver of the truck, a 63-year-old Charlotte resident, was taken to the hospital. Officials said he will be OK.
Officials contacted DOT, whose employees said that there should be at least a foot of dirt and grass on the side of the road to prevent other drivers from driving off the road. The scene of the accident does not have this buffer.
The tractor-trailer knocked over a utility pole, but officials said that local power was not affected.
Officials reopened the road before noon Monday.
