WILLCOX, AZ Two hurt in accident on Fort Grant Road on Tuesday, November 29th 2016

Two people were injured in an accident last Tuesday afternoon on Fort Grant Road, north of Willcox.

Alma Brown-Gwilt, 45, of Willcox, and Chris Grageda, 27, were injured when a Nissan Altima, driven by 50-year old Maria Oscar-Peralta, also of Willcox, struck Gwilt’s car near the intersection of Fort Grant and Hardy Roads, said Carol Capas, spokeswoman for the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office.

The Sheriff’s Office received a report of the accident at 1:15 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 22. Arriving on scene, deputies found Gwilt’s car damaged and off the road, she said.

An eye witness told deputies that he was northbound on Fort Grant Road behind Gwilt’s Buick, when she slowed and signaled for a left turn into a residence, Capas said.

The witness was stopped behind Gwilt, and another car was behind him, she said.

As Gwilt was turning left, Oscar-Peralta’s car moved into the southbound lane, passing both stopped vehicles and hitting Gwilt’s car on the driver’s side, Capas said.

Gwilt’s Buick spun off the road, coming to rest where the deputies later located it, she said.

When deputies arrived, Oscar-Peralta was found standing outside her car. She identified herself as the driver of the Nissan Altima, Capas said.

According to the Willcox Volunteer Fire Department, a LifeNet helicopter responded to the scene, but was not used.

Both Gwilt and Grageda were transported by ground to Northern Cochise Community Hospital, in Willcox, for treatment of what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries.

Eyewitnesses told deputies that Oscar-Peralta had been traveling at a high rate of speed, Capas said.

The next day, Oscar-Peralta went to the Willcox Police Department and said that she had been driving about 60 miles per hour at the time of the accident, she said.

Oscar-Peralta was arrested and charged with “speed not reasonable and prudent,” said Capas, who had no further information on the accident at press time.
