Boardman, NC : Billy Carroll Lee, 56, died after a wreck on U.S. 74 in Columbus County on Friday night, April 8, 2016

Investigators are unsure why a Lumberton man lost control off his vehicle in a Friday night wreck in Columbus County that killed him and injured his wife, according to the state Highway Patrol.

Billy Carroll Lee, 56, was pronounced dead at the scene of the wreck, which occurred at about 7:22 p.m. Friday in the westbound lane of U.S. 74, just more than a mile east of Boardman, according to a report filed by Trooper P.E. Nance.

Lee’s wife, 61-year-old Becky Williamson Lee, was thrown from the vehicle. She was flown to New Hanover Regional Medical Center and is in stable condition.

According to Nance’s report, the vehicle was traveling west when it exited the road to the left, toward a median. Billy Lee over-corrected and veered back onto the road before the vehicle ran off the road to the right, striking a ditch and overturning on its top, the report said.

Billy Lee was wearing a seat belt.
