Wexford County, MI : Caledonia woman dies after possible drunk driver collides with a semi on M-115 near S. 39 Rd early Saturday morning on September 13, 2014
A 24-year-old Caledonia woman was killed early Saturday when the car she was traveling in collided with a semi-trailer on M115 in Clam Lake Township, authorities said.
The name of the woman, a passenger in the car, was not released pending notification of her family. The driver of the car, who was allegedly intoxicated, fled the scene following the crash but was later arrested by police, authorities said.
The crash happened around 5 a.m. on M115, near S. 39 Road.
Police said the car was traveling southeast a high rate of speed when the driver attempted to pass another vehicle traveling the same direction. The vehicle then lost control and collided with the semi-trailer, which was traveling northwest on M115, police said.
Upon impact, the rear portion of the car was “sheared off,” ejecting the woman. Police said she was believed to be sleeping at the time.
The driver and passenger in the semi-trailer were uninjured in the accident.
A news release from the Michigan State Police said seat belts were used by the driver of the car and the driver and passenger in the semi-trailer. The news release did not say whether the Caledonia woman was wearing a seat belt.
The name of the driver of the car was not released, but police said the driver suffered minor injuries and was arrested for leaving the scene of an accident and operating under the influence causing death.
