Two people were taken to the hospital with injuries following a head-on collision on Route 1 in Damariscotta early July 1.
According to a report by the Lincoln County Communications Center, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to the scene at the intersection of Midcoast Road and Route 1, near NC Hunt Lumber at 2:31 a.m.
Brandon Bezio,26, of Tenants Harbor, was driving his 2011 Toyota Tacoma northbound on Route 1 on the southbound side of the median which divides the intersection.
After traveling approximately a quarter of a mile on the wrong side of the median, Bezio encountered a 2014 Volvo tractor trailer traveling in the southbound lane. The tractor-trailer attempted to avoid the collision; however, was struck head-on by Bezio.
A female passenger in Bezio's vehicle was ejected. She was believed to not have been wearing a seatbelt. Central Lincoln County Ambulance took her to Lincoln Health Miles Campus with serious injuries to her lower extremities.
She was later taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland for further care. Her injuries are not believed to be life threatening.
A male passenger in the tractor-trailer, who was unrestrained in the sleeper compartment, was also taken to Lincoln Health Miles Campus in Damariscotta for evaluation of back pain.
The driver of the Volvo tractor trailer, owned by Maine Paper and Food of New York, was Edgar Garcia, 26, of Springfield, MA. He was seat belted and uninjured in the collision.
Lincoln County Sheriff's deputies arrested Bezio charged him with operating under the influence. His initial court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 31 at the Lincoln County Court.
The Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office is assisting with the crash reconstruction and the Maine State Police Commercial Vehicle Inspection Unit is assisting with the commercial vehicle as is required by law. The Damariscotta Fire Department also responded and assisted at the scene.
Route 1 was completely shut down until approximately until 6:30 a.m. when one-way traffic was restored. Both lanes of travel were restored by 8:21 a.m.
