Tacoma, WA : Runaway garbage truck crashes into Gig Harbor restaurant early Wednesday, March 29, 2017

A runaway garbage truck crashed into a restaurant in Uptown Gig Harbor early Wednesday, prompting a gas leak and evacuation of nearby businesses.

People called 911 just after 11 a.m. to report that a truck had plowed into a Panera Bread restaurant. Officers arrived to find a garbage truck and a car crashed into the building.

The truck’s driver had been moving a Dumpster back to its position at a restaurant and forgot to set the truck’s parking brake, Police Chief Kelly Busey said.

That’s when the truck started rolling away.

“The truck rolled backward unattended about 300 feet, amazingly straight back through the parking lot, across the road and into the other parking lot,” Busey said.

When the truck entered the second parking lot, it hit the car, then rolled toward the Panera Bread. The truck hit a window in the restaurant, but didn’t do any structural damage to the building.

“If you spent a year trying to engineer how this collisioned happened, you couldn’t do it,” Busey said. “It’s just a fluke.”

No one was injured, but businesses in the complex at 4701 Point Fosdick Drive NW were evacuated due to a gas leak. The gas was shut off about noon.

Some businesses remained closed while the truck was extracted and officials assessed the building.
