LAKE HARTWELL, GA : Body pulled from water after truck crashes into Lake Hartwell on Tuesday, 1st January 2019
A body was pulled out of Lake Hartwell Tuesday morning after a truck crashed into the water, according to Stephens County Coroner Chris Stephens.
Stephens said the truck went off the Old Georgia U.S. Highway 123 Bridge, also known as the Broken Bridges.
The bridge is called Broken Bridges because a large section of the bridge, which once connected South Carolina to Georgia, was removed years ago.
Stephens said it is unknown if any other people were in the truck when it went into the lake. Boats were still in the water as of 11 a.m. and appeared to be searching the area.
Stephens County Sheriff Randy Shirley told WNEG News that witnesses reported seeing the truck go through wooden posts on the bridge, travel off the middle section of the old span and crash into the lake.
