Detroit, MI : State Trooper injured in crash on Detroit’s west side early Wednesday morning, December 9, 2015

A Michigan State Police trooper is recovering after being injured in a car crash early Wednesday morning when a SUV ran a flashing red light and smashed into the patrol car.

According to the MSP, the incident occurred at about 2:50 a.m. at the intersection of Fenkell near St. Mary’s on the city’s west side.

The trooper and his partner were on their way to a traffic stop when a 1995 GMC, driven southbound on St. Mary’s by a 31-year-old Inkster man, ran a flashing red light and T-boned the side of the MSP patrol car traveling eastbound on Fenkell.

One trooper was treated for back and neck pain at a local hospital and was then released. The second trooper was uninjured.

The driver of the GMC was also treated and then released. An investigation shows that the driver had four outstanding warrants and three current license suspensions.

Police believe he was under the influence of narcotics when the crash occurred. The driver of the GMC is jailed due to his warrants pending further investigation of the crash.
