A woman was critically injured in a one-vehicle accident on West State Boulevard early today, Fort Wayne police said.
Officers were called to West State at Wood Valley Drive about 7:20 a.m. and found a sport-utility vehicle that had crashed into a stand of mature trees, police said in a statement.
The driver was removed from the vehicle by Fort Wayne firefighters and was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, police said.
They said the driver was traveling east on West State at a high rate of speed, drove left of center across the other lane of traffic and crashed into the trees.
Alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the crash, police said.
The crash remains under investigation by city police and the Allen County prosecutor's office.
