A woman was critically injured in a one-vehicle accident on West State Boulevard early today, Fort Wayne police said.

Officers were called to West State at Wood Valley Drive about 7:20 a.m. and found a sport-utility vehicle that had crashed into a stand of mature trees, police said in a statement.

The driver was removed from the vehicle by Fort Wayne firefighters and was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, police said.

They said the driver was traveling east on West State at a high rate of speed, drove left of center across the other lane of traffic and crashed into the trees.

Alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the crash, police said.

The crash remains under investigation by city police and the Allen County prosecutor's office.
