Lehigh Acres, FL : Woman hit and killed while walking near the intersection of 16 Street West and Colin Avenue North Saturday morning on September 27, 2014

An 80-year-old woman was hit and killed by an SUV in Lehigh Acres Saturday morning. The crash happened at around 7:12 a.m. near the intersection of 16th Street W and Colin Avenue N. According to Florida Highway Patrol, 22-year-old Jose Ramirez was driving east on 16th Street W. At the same time, Shirley Burns was taking a morning walk in the same direction. Ramirez attempted to steer the SUV to the right to avoid hitting Burns, but was unsuccessful. The driver's sister - Bridgette Ramirez - says Jose Ramirez immediately pulled over and called for help. "It's not like he did it on purpose. If he did it on purpose, he would have hit and run. He didn't hit and run. He went to go help her. I don't want them to think we're bad people," said Bridgette Ramirez, the driver's sister. Burns was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital where she was pronounced dead. We spoke to Burns' family who says she was an energetic, loving mom to her eight children. Alcohol was not a factor in the crash. FHP is still investigating the incident.
