Police say a 17-year-old college student was killed in a car crash on Long Island.

Suffolk County police say it happened Tuesday morning near the Suffolk County Community College campus in Brentwood.

Police say Anil John was apparently pulled off the roadway as he was moving southbound on Crooked Hill Road after having been involved in a minor crash.

Police say John was hit by a car after he got out of his vehicle.

Newsday reports the former Islip High School basketball player was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the other car, 81-year-old Thomas Stapleton, of East Northport, was taken to the hospital for observation.

John was studying computer engineering and computer science at Suffolk Community College.
