One person is dead after a Jeep erupted into flames after a crash in Elyria Monday morning.
First responders were called to the intersection of West Avenue and Third Street around 5:46 a.m. where they found a 2007 Jeep Liberty on fire. Officers tried to get into the vehicle to save the driver but said they were pushed back by the intensity of the flames.
The driver of the other vehicle, a 2003 Buick Century, was removed from her vehicle just before it also caught fire.
Firefighters were unable to get the driver of the Jeep — 58-year-old Vicki Hill — out. She died from her injuries.
The other driver, Kristi Fitch, 40, had serious injuries as a result of the crash and was lifeflighted to MetroHealth Medical Center for treatment.
Investigators believe Hill was stopped at the traffic signal at the intersection of West Avenue and Third street when Fitch rear ended the Jeep, causing extensive damage to both cars.
Fitch was given a citation for operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The investigation is ongoing.
