Watertown, TN : Former Watertown football player killed in crash on Saturday, November 12, 2016

A 19-year-old former Watertown High School football player who worked in town was killed in a one-vehicle crash late Saturday.

Michael Wesley Sexton was driving south on Statesville Road in a 2003 Toyota Tacoma that left the roadway at a curve, overturned and hit a utility pole according to a Tennessee Highway Patrol report.

There was no evidence of drugs or alcohol associated with the crash, according to the report.

A 17-year-old passenger who is a student at Watertown High was injured in the wreck. The 17-year-old has been released from the hospital, according to Watertown High football coach Gavin Webster.

Neither Sexton nor the passenger were wearing seat belts, the report states.

Sexton started at offensive guard and defensive end in 2013 and 2014, his sophomore and junior years at Watertown Webster said.

“Respectful, hardworking,” Webster said about Sexton. “He’ll be sadly missed, he had a lot of friends.”

Sexton went on to graduate from Wilson County Adult High School as part of the 2016 class, according to the district.

He had been working several months at Three Forks Marketplace and was being trained as a meat cutter, according to manager Vicki Means.

“He was a good kid, soft-spoken kid,” Means said. “He liked coon hunting and talked about that.”

Survivors include parents Bruce and Tanya Sexton, brother Bryan James Sexton and girlfriend Shelby Hamlet.
