Ashtabula,OH : Woman charged in crash on May, Monday 7th 2018
Prosecutors say an Ashtabula woman who crashed her vehicle and seriously injured two child passengers last year is believed to have been under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
The Ashtabula County Grand Jury last week indicted Kristina L. Nedley, 31, of 1229 W. 45th St., Ashtabula, on two third-degree felony counts of aggravated vehicular assault, two fifth-degree felony and one first-degree misdemeanor counts of endangering children, one first-degree misdemeanor count of operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, a drug of abuse or a combination and one fourth-degree misdemeanor count of illegal use or possession of drug paraphernalia.
County Prosecutor Nicholas Iarocci said Nedley was traveling westbound along Plymouth Ridge Road in Plymouth Township in the early morning hours of April 15, 2017 with three children in her vehicle — all relatives, ages 10, 6 and 2 — when the crash occurred.
Nedley’s vehicle reportedly struck a guardrail along the westbound lane and crossed into the other lane, running through a culvert and ultimately striking a tree head-on.
“Two of the children (the 6- and 10-year-old) sustained fairly serious injuries,” Iarocci said Monday.
“For the most part, they have recovered after extensive medical treatment.”
The 2-year-old child was reportedly in a car seat and was not injured, he said.
Nedley also sustained “serious injuries” and required medical treatment. The OVI charge is based on the results of Nedley’s blood work during that treatment, he said.
“We do believe there was alcohol and some other drugs in her system at the time,” he said, but declined to identify those drugs.
Nedley has yet to be interviewed by county investigators, he said.
Charges were filed in January of this year. Nedley did not appear for her arraignment Feb. 5 in Ashtabula Municipal Court and an arrest warrant was issued.
She was arraigned about a week later and pleaded not guilty to the lesser child endangering and possession charges.
She was released on a $10,000 personal recognizance bond, with the condition she commit no alcohol or drug offenses.
The remaining felony charges were bound over to the county Common Pleas Court, where that bond was continued.
Nedley’s case has yet to be assigned to a judge and no further court dates have been set.
