Corning,CA : Passenger dies in I-5 crash on September, saturday 2nd 2017
A 33-year-old Sacramento woman was killed when the car she was riding in crashed about 8:30 a.m. Saturday on northbound Interstate 5, south of the Corning Road exit.
The driver, identified as Pao Her, 32, of Sacramento was taken to St. Elizabeth Community Hospital in Red Bluff for treatment of minor injuries, according to a California Highway Patrol press release.
Witness statements indicated Her was driving a 2015 Toyota Camry north in the left lane at about 70 mph when he allowed the vehicle to leave the road, sideswiped a small tree and continued along the embankment, hitting a large tree head-on.
The Toyota caught fire and surrounding brush and trees were engulfed as well, according to the release.
Her was able to extricate himself and he and people passing by made efforts to extricate the woman, but were unable to free her from the vehicle. She died of her injuries at the scene, according to the release.
Drugs and alcohol do not appear to have played a part in the collision.
