Cottage Grove, OR : Motorist injured in crash that takes out power pole near Cottage Grove on Sunday afternoon, May 15, 2016

Oregon State Police are investigating a car crash that sent one person to the hospital and caused a power outage after the motorist struck a power pole on Sunday afternoon, authorities said.

The motorist, who was not immediately identified, was taken to Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend in Springfield with serious injuries, said South Lane Fire Division Chief Joe Raade.

State police and state Department of Transportation officials also responded to the scene, on Highway 99 between Latham Road and Kennedy Lane, around 3:30 p.m., Raade said.

The impact of the crash sheared the power pole, and multiple live power lines covered the vehicle, delaying the motorist’s rescue until Emerald People’s Utility District crews arrived and deemed the scene safe to enter.

Power was out in areas mostly south of the accident scene, Raade said.
