Springfield, IL : Two dead after two-vehicle crash east of Springfield on Tuesday, 13th November 2018

Two Springfield residents died after a two-vehicle collision east of the city on Tuesday afternoon.

Patrick Pletz, 57, died at HSHS St. John’s Hospital at 4:40 p.m. Tuesday. Barbara Pope, 76, died at Memorial Medical Center at 3:44 p.m. The crash happened just before 3 p.m. on North Oaklane Road, just north of Mechanicsburg Road.

Authorities said it appeared a vehicle driven by Pletz was southbound on Oaklane Road when, for unknown reasons, it veered into the northbound lane and hit a second vehicle head on. Pope was a passenger in the second vehicle. The driver of the second vehicle was taken to the hospital.

Autopsies conducted Wednesday showed Pletz and Pope died of injuries suffered in the crash, Sangamon County Coroner Cinda Edwards said. Final autopsy reports are pending further testing.
