One Killed in Pileup on 210 Freeway in Pasadena
One person was killed and two others injured in an underground six-vehicle crash on the eastbound Foothill (210) Freeway in Pasadena early today, and a second motorist was killed on the same freeway less than three hours later, authorities said.Three big rigs and three other vehicles were involved in the first wreck, said California Highway Patrol dispatch officer A. Rubio, adding that a 50-year-old man died at the scene.A Pasadena Fire Department commander told a videographer at the scene that the deceased was the driver of the lead big rig in the wreck. He said the big rig jackknifed, with the cab and trailer separating. Two people were taken from the site to a hospital, the fire commander said. The accident occurred around 12:10 a.m. on the two-lane underground transition from the eastbound 210 to the eastbound Ventura (134) Freeway, resulting in the closure of the eastbound 210 and traffic being diverted to the westbound 134, Rubio said.A second big rig fatality, this one reported at 2:57 a.m, about 4 miles east on the eastbound 210, prompted the closure of the Metro Gold Line between Pasadena's Allen and Sierra Madre Villa stations, Metro spokeswoman Kim Upton said.
