Two people were seriously injured in a head-on collision in Palmerdale Tuesday.
Center Point and Palmerdale firefighters, as well as Jefferson County sheriff's deputies, responded to the late afternoon on Alabama 79. Center Point Fire Chief Donnie West said a man was driving one of the vehicles, and a woman was driving the other.
Upon impact, one of the vehicles caught fire and then the second vehicle did as well. Both drivers were trapped until a bystander broke the windows to pull them out of the wreckage.
West said both vehicles were "mangled" and the victims' injuries serious. Initial emergency responder radio traffic said both victims were in critical condition, but West said they were conscious when they left the scene.
Both were taken to UAB Hospital. No additional information was immediately available.
