SOUTH DEERFIELD, MA : Driver injured in Deerfield collision on Wednesday, December 28th 2016
The driver of a red pickup truck was taken to the hospital with serious injuries Wednesday just before 5 p.m. after a two-car accident at the intersection of Routes 5 and 10 and North Main Street.
At the crash scene around 5:15 p.m., the pickup truck faced south on Greenfield Road, debris scattered around, its front end smashed, doors removed by firefighters, and wheels collapsed inward.
A few hundred feet away, the van had skidded off the road and was sitting in the grass. The van’s four passengers were checked for injuries at the scene and declined EMS transport to the hospital.
Deerfield Police officer Adam Sokoloski said the truck was crossing Routes 5 and 10, from North Main Street to Mill Village Road, when it was hit by the van heading north on Greenfield Road.
Sokoloski said although the driver’s injuries were serious, “we don’t believe they were life-threatening.”
Firefighters used extrication equipment to help the driver out of the car. Initially, rescue workers called for a LifeFlight helicopter, but they canceled the request soon after, opting instead to take the driver to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield via ambulance.
Sokoloski said airbags deployed in both vehicles and, at least in the van, all passengers were wearing seat belts. Police don’t think there was any foul play involved, adding that no citations were given to any of the passengers and drivers involved. He also said the investigation is ongoing, led by Deerfield Police Department.
Initially, the road was shut down to through traffic. Then, while rescue workers cleaned up the scene and put away equipment, police officers routed traffic around the truck, which had stopped in the middle of the road.
