Maryville, TN : Woman taken to hospital after fiery crash in Alcoa Monday, February 20, 2017

A driver was taken to the hospital after a two-car collision Monday on Old Knoxville Highway while several others, including three minors, were possibly injured.

While initial reports indicated no one was taken to the hospital following the crash near Clayton Road, 53-year-old Dandridge resident Melanie S. Gill was taken by Rural/Metro Ambulance Service to Turkey Creek Medical Center, according to an Alcoa Police report. A spokesperson for the hospital said Gill was treated and released.

Gill, driving a 2006 Pontiac Grand Am, was at the intersection of Old Knoxville Highway and Clayton Road around 12:20 p.m. and started turning left onto Clayton Road on a left turn signal, police said.

That’s when a 1988 Ford Bronco driven by Diranda M. Hamby, 18, of Old Knoxville Highway, Maryville, came traveling from the opposite direction on Old Knoxville Highway, reports said.

Hamby was using her cellphone, police said, and did not notice she had a red light. Hamby ran the light and the two vehicles collided. After all of the Bronco’s occupants had exited the vehicle, it caught fire as a result of engine damage caused in the crash.

Two units from the Alcoa Fire Department responded and extinguished the blaze in about five minutes, firefighters said.

Police said several of the Bronco’s occupants complained of soreness or potential minor injuries. Hamby and her three minor passengers — Thomas Brown, 4, Old Knoxville Highway, Maryville; Gracie Stinnett, 12, Big Gully Road, Maryville; and Carmen Stinnett, 10, Big Gully Road, Maryville — were all possibly injured, according to the report. None were transported to the hospital, the report said.

Hamby was cited on charges of disobeying a traffic signal and no proof of insurance.

Police do not believe drugs or alcohol were a factor. All the occupants were wearing seat belts, the report said, and Brown was in a booster seat.
