An Indiana school bus crashed on way to the first day of classes.

The Maconaquah (mah KAH' nah kwah) School Corporation bus was on its way to Pipe Creek Elementary School about 8 a.m. Friday when it collided with a Jeep on U.S. 31 near Bunker Hill, about 60 miles north of Indianapolis.

Superintendent Doug Arnold says none of the 18 kindergarten and first-graders on the bus were injured. Arnold says medics checked each student.

Sheriff Tim Miller says the Jeep's three occupants, including an 18-month-old girl, were taken to area hospitals. Sixty-eight-year-old Phyllis Whybrew was flown to Fort Wayne Lutheran Hospital, where a spokesman said she was in serious condition.

The Kokomo Tribune reports the front driver's side of the bus and the Jeep's rear driver's side were damaged.
