Sioux Falls, SD : One seriously hurt in crash on I-229 near Rice Street in Sioux Falls on Tuesday, September 30, 2014
Sioux Falls, South Dakota
One person is seriously hurt after a rollover and a multi-car crash on Interstate-229 on Tuesday.
According to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, a 45-year-old Brandon woman was driving a 2008 Dodge pickup south on I-229 near Rice Street in Sioux Falls. She lost control of the pickup, which caused her to enter the median. The pickup truck rolled.
The woman was trapped in the vehicle until emergency responders freed her. Authorities say she sustained serious but non-life threatening injuries in the crash.
After the rollover crash, northbound traffic on I-229 began to slow at the crash scene area. Department of Public Safety officials say that caused a rear end collision to occur.
Authorities say the driver of 2001 International semi truck was unable to slow down his truck to the speed of traffic, and rear-ended three vehicles. The truck's braking caused the trailer to jackknife. The truck and trailer eventually came to rest against the concrete bridge rail over Rice Street.
A 20-year-old driver of one of the vehicles that was rear-ended by the semi suffered minor injuries in the crash. Authorities say everyone involved in the crash was wearing a seat belt.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. Sioux Falls Police Department and Sioux Falls Fire and Rescue assisted.
