Larimer County ,CO :Update: Cyclist critical after crash with dump truck on Friday , June 26th 2015
A 59-year-old Fort Collins cyclist was taken to the hospital with life threatening injuries Friday after being struck by a dump truck just east of the city, according to Colorado State Patrol.Steven Studt was struck on Larimer County Road 36E while riding west over Interstate 25, Trooper Rob Madden said. Studt's condition wasn't immediately available Friday night.Shortly before 2:30 Friday, Studt was riding west on LCR 36E — also known as Kechter Road — toward Fort Collins. A freightliner dump truck traveling the same direction attempted to pass the cyclist in the eastbound lanes, but oncoming vehicles caused the driver to move back into the westbound lanes.
When the driver moved back he collided with the cyclist causing Studt to get ejected from his bike. Studt fell beneath the rear times of the dump truck, Madden said in an email. The cyclist was transported to the Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland with life threatening injuries. The 69-year-old driver of the dump truck, Jose Pinon of Eaton, was not injured and remained at the scene after the collision. An initial investigation revealed that the cyclist was following the law and riding to the right side of the lane as required. Speed, alcohol and drugs are not factors, Madden said.CSP is continuing to investigate the crash and the report of the oncoming vehicles, none of which stopped. The agency is asking anybody who witnessed the crash or those traveling eastbound when the dump truck attempted to pass the cyclist to call the Colorado State Patrol at (303) 239-4501 and ask to leave a message for Trooper Dusty Kraft.
