San Diego, CA : Car crashes into pickup mounted on tow truck in San Diego on Sunday, February 22, 2015
A tow truck driver escaped injury after car slammed into his tow truck as he was helping clear a previous crash on northbound state Route 163.
The collision happened at about 11:45 p.m. Sunday on northbound SR-163 at the bottom of the Washington Street onramp, according to authorities.
The tow truck driver was working underneath a pickup truck that was mounted on his flatbed when he noticed a BMW speeding towards him. He jumped out of the way just before the BMW went up the flat bed and slammed into the pickup.
The impact sent the pickup truck into the tow truck's cab area, and authorities said the BMW's driver was knocked unconscious for a brief period.
Authorities said when the BMW driver came to, he tried to run away but California Highway Patrol officers already at the scene detained him and had him sent to the hospital.
10News learned the driver was cited for the incident.
There is no immediate word on what caused the driver to hit the tow truck.
No injuries were reported, and all northbound SR-163 lanes were cleared after nearly an hour.
