Bend, OR : Three people died as driver fleeing police crashes head-on with another car on U.S. 97 north of La Pine on Tuesday night, Nov 17, 2015

Oregon State Police say three people died when a driver eluding sheriff's deputies collided head-on with another vehicle.

Lt. Bill Fugate says the crash happened Tuesday night on U.S. 97 north of La Pine. He says deputies had stopped their pursuit shortly before the crash.

Police have yet to identify the victims or say why deputies were chasing the driver.

KTVZ reports that information from a police scanner indicates a deputy started pursuing a pickup at about 8:40 p.m. When speeds hit triple digits, a deputy was overheard saying to discontinue the pursuit.

A few minutes later, another officer said: "He's going to hit somebody head-on!" She quickly added: "He just hit somebody head-on, and we have flames!"
