Sonoma County, CA : 51-year-old Oakland man killed in a Highway 101 crash south of Cloverdale on Tuesday, March 3, 2015

California Highway Patrol officials said a 51-year-old Oakland man died in a crash in the Asti area between Geyserville and Cloverdale in northern Sonoma County on Tuesday night.

The man's name is not yet being released because his next-of-kin has not been notified of his death, according to the Sonoma County coroner's office.

Two CHP officers were investigating a non-injury crash on northbound U.S. Highway 101 south of Dutcher Creek Road around 8:10 p.m. when a passerby notified them of a vehicle off of the highway just north of Asti Road, CHP officials said.

One of the officers located the overturned vehicle, a 1973 Pinto with a distinctive custom paint job, off of the right shoulder on northbound Highway 101, according to the CHP.

The vehicle was approximately 50 feet off the road down on an embankment with its right side against a tree. The driver and only occupant of the Pinto was trapped inside. The Cloverdale Fire Department pronounced the man dead at the scene, CHP officials said.

Investigators do not know why he lost control and drove off the road or whether intoxication was a factor in the crash.
