CHARLOTTE, NC : Man killed in crash at NC Welcome Center was driving stolen car on Wednesday, 9th November 2016
Charlotte, North Carolina
Police say a man killed in crash in southwest Charlotte Wednesday morning was driving a vehicle that was reported stolen.
Officers were called to the North Carolina Welcome Center on I-77 near Westinghouse Boulevard just before 8:30 a.m. for a single vehicle crash. When they got to the center, they said they found a 1999 Honda Accord that had gone off the exit ramp and struck two trees.
Officials said it appeared the vehicle was going too fast to negotiate the curve and ran off the road, striking a light pole and a tree before going airborne and hitting a second tree.
The driver of the car, identified as 35-year-old Donald D. Angelo Dixon, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said Dixon was not wearing a seat belt.
Investigators said the Honda was reported stolen at 5:24 a.m. and was also involved in a hit-and-run at another location at 7:43 a.m.
Police are asking anyone with additional information to call Detective Gormican at 704-432-2169.
